After first
considering various routes in the South West, I decided a different format
could stretch me further. The idea was formed through the discovery of a hand
drawn map that had been buried in my walking coat pocket for 9 months. This
prematurely aged paper was given to me by a man in North Argyll, sending me to
an isolated house in the forest that he knew I would be inspired to paint: a
place I would never have otherwise found. I dug out the sketches, and combined
with the map and vivid memories I am now working on the
painting.
Whilst carefully
piecing together this map, I began to think how this idea could form a whole
series of paintings - if enough people could draw me maps and write
instructions to their special places - not the obvious beauty spots, but more
intimate locations - then it would make such an engaging body pf work. And the
fact that Bath and Somerset is unfamiliar territory makes it the ideal
location. |
